Quiz 12.1:

Question:

A helicopter is hovering 3000 meters directly over the eastern perimeter of a secret Air Force installation. The eastern perimeter is 5000 meters straight east from the installation headquaters. The helicopter receives a transmission from headquarters that a UFO has been sighted at 7500 meters directly over the installation's western perimeter, which is 9000 meters straight west from the headquarters. How far must the helicopter travel to intercept the UFO? In what direction must it head?

5th Ed: #21

Solution:

Helicopter to UFO

By Pythagoras, \( d = \sqrt{14000^2+4500^2}=17705\)m

Using right triangle trig, \( \theta = \tan^{-1} \left ( \frac{4500}{14000} \right ) = 17.8 ^\circ \)
